Drôme, The amusing round of the markets of the summer
10 Août 2006
Tweet

It is the high season of fruit and vegetables of the summer and the stalls of the markets are more appetizing that ever. One regales oneself, almost on the spot, with peaches, brugnons, apricots, melons and nectarines, and one can shop for all the local produce which abounds in the area.

You, who are reading these lines, rush to Grignan! At the foot of the castle of the Marquise de Sèvignè there is a night market that offers local produce and handicraft objects. It starts at 6pm and lasts until 1h in the morning, in a 17th century environment, with locals disguised as marchionesses, or courtiers, but also beggars and peasants. One can even rent costumes to take part in the festival. This astonishing market takes place on two dates during the summer. And the second is precisely on August 11th!

More traditional, but quite as plentiful, it is the market of Romans, Well located on a square of the historical centre and where you can profit from it to discover the Pogne, local brioche scented with orange blossom extract. At Crest, one can stock up with picodons, delicious small goat’s milk cheeses which one can choose according to one’s taste, very fresh or seriously refined, or even as hard as wood. But what a perfume!

Of course, you will find nougat on the market at Montèlimar and also organic fruit and vegetables, gorged with sun. You will choose your olive oil in Nyons, not only on the market that lasts year, but also at the market of Provence, which goes from the square of the Arcades to the Arch of the Pont de Roman, during the whole summer. And there you can take advantage of it to discover the very new vinegar factory of Raphaël Delaye that has opened at the beginning of the summer.

At Buis les Baronnies, city of the lime and apricots, you will find all the plants for herb tea and you will profit from it to make a halt at the House of the Plants. Thus, you will know everything absolutely everything, about lavender, thyme, basil or rosemary…
