Kitesurf : On water with wings
01 Jan 1970
Tweet

Kitesurfing is a quite new hang-gliding discipline. Invented in the 90′s by the French, but which has been taught since 2000. In Rhône-Alpes, you will learn and practise this new kind of glide on Lake Monteynard near Grenoble. A quasi-ideal spot and in the sense of the wind.

To practise kitesurfing also called flysurfing, which is still more eloquent, you must equip yourself with a traction wing baptized kite and let yourself glide on the water. When your technique is under control, then you can draw beautiful curves in the waves and take off to impressive heights.

It is not a sport for athletes exclusively, everyone can try, and the only condition is to be well supervised. If this specialty is very accessible and gentle on snow for instance, on the lakes, you have to take into account the requirements of the aquatic milieu, which is a bit less obvious for humanoids. In a word, if you fall down with your skis, you get up and restart.

On water, you have to manage your drift, orient yourself, get back to the surface, and get your sail back in the right direction. Take also account of all the windsurfers and boats sailing at the surface of the lake very close to you. At Monteynard, Gaël Braud and his team train their pupils and follow them from a boat, to give them assistance if any help is needed. All have a national diploma. Security above all…

So you can really enjoy yourself if you are in good physical condition. During Gaël’s training sessions, some of the participants weighed more than 120 kilos, some others were 70 years old and others 15 year old teenagers. Everything went off smoothly.

Freekite has selected Lake Monteynard, because the wind is ideal. Between April and October, it blows from the valley, in the lake axis, which is long and narrow in, and can reach 18 knots (i.e. a bit over 33 kilometres / hour).

Numerous all levels training sessions are organized and above all, don’t miss the Freekite Contest, a great celebration of the specialty with about twenty amateurs who fight on the surface of water in both a spectacular and friendly joust. You will not only see a beautiful spectacle, but also in the evening everyone celebrates, spectators included. A really pleasant way to close the summer months.

Informations pratiques
Freekite is the only kitesurfing school in Rhône-Alpes. It is easy to find on Lake Monteynard edges, since a straw hut from the isles has been installed right at the edge this year.

Training sessions are organized by Freekite from 2 to 15 days on Lake Monteynard with 5 hour lessons per day and equipment lending from 245 euros. Accommodation possible in bungalows or tents – full board.

The Freekite Contest takes place from August 19th 2006. Possibility to meet some professionals used to participating in competitions. Lake Monteynard, 2nd most windy lake in France, is the training terrain of gliding stars such as Edgar Grospiron, Damien Pattou and some others.
