There are a good forty festivals devoted to Mozart in the whole world including fourteen in the United States and only one in France: the one of Saoû, a village of four hundred and twenty inhabitants in the Drôme department.
For all that, it is not a question of a rural festival which would welcome visitors in an exceptional natural site, a handful of privileged spectators who would come to make a small tour and then would go away almost at once. Nothing of all that! Not only, has the Festival Saoû chante Mozart acquired an international notoriety, by accommodating artists and interpreters from all over the world, but it is firmly anchored in its area and gives the best to all those who love Mozart, classical music, and who wish to celebrate it. The Festival takes place during June and July, in fifteen communes of this superb area of the Diois.
Everyone gets involved, the cathedrals and churches resound to the sacred music of the salzbourgeois, but there are also strange places which are caught up in the game. One can write letters to Mozart at the restaurant l’Oiseau sur la Branche , one can read his Gallant Letters in the restaurant Cerise et Vinaigrette.
And there are many free concerts: at Châteauneuf de Bordette, a village of one hundred inhabitants, on July 14, with a republican buffet; the final evening, which takes place in the two twin towns of Romans and Bourg de Pèage, with a huge picnic between the two concerts. But one should not miss at any price, the Dinner under the plane trees on the Place des Cagnards, in Saoû, which unites public and interpreters, after a concert, the latter offering a serenade at the end of the meal.
And the concert in the famous Forest of Saoû, magic and classified site, which will welcome the New Orchestra of Geneva for a creation according to Gran Partita, the most beautiful composition for wind instruments of the musician. Divine Mozart…
