Discover the Loire that sparkles!
29 Sept 2005
Tweet

Did you know, the Loire is the first French department producing mineral sparkling water with 400 million bottles per year? Of course, Badoit, in Saint Galmier takes the lion’s share with 340 million bottles, but there are, here and there, lots of secret small springs which are worth being discovered…

av012_1_

Since antiquity, one came to the Loire to take the waters and for various treatments. Springs were very famous and very busy. Later the nobles of the Kingdom came also to treat their skin diseases, their respiratory infections and all kind of health troubles. The Empress Eugènie herself, used to come to the resort of Sail lès Bains.

During the industrial merger period, some of the springs were put aside and even unexploited, but the passion of the public for mineral water and spring water has given them a second youth. Let’s go and meet them:

Badoit in Saint Galmier: is a star, it was also the first water to be bottled. Thanks to the commercial genius of its discoverer, Saturnin Badoit. It is now part of the Danone group and its bottling factories can be visited.

Parot in Saint Romain le Puy: It is more and more frequently served in the water bars and at the tables of respected restaurants. It gushes out in the Forez plain and on the hills of the Monts du Forez.

Saint Alban: It was well known by the Romans and its thermal activity was flourishing in the 19th century. It is now bottled.

Sail lès Bains : Has numerous therapeutic virtues recognized in dermatology and is part of the 14 non-treated, completely natural, French springs. The thermal activity, which was stopped, should restart very soon.

Montarcher : When you have a glass of water from a water fountain at a public office, a shop or a firm, there’s every chance that it is water which has come from Montarcher, which gushes out at about 1200 m alt., in Monts du Forez. It is commercialized in large containers, in the Mountain Spring Water market.

You can also discover all these springs and organize a personal tour, visiting the factories of some of them.
