The Far North in the Vercors
07 Jan 2009
Tweet

Learn how to drive a husky team in the mountains and even go for a trek of three to five days; this is what Jiri, the musher fascinated by North Spirit proposes. With him, you will have the impression of tearing along on the pack ice with the husky team and taking off towards the North Pole.

Jiri (pronounce Youra௠) has long been fascinated by husky team driving. When he arrived from his native country where he often went into the mountains and used sleighs to transport luggage, this native Czech decided to make it his profession and obtained all the diplomas required to allow him to take people through the forest of Vassieux.

From this area of the Vercors where he settled, he says that it is the biggest husky site in the Alps. And he justifies it by demonstrating that with forty kilometres of packed slopes where husky teams, pedestrians, Nordic skiers and those who practise snowshoes cohabit, one is really in a snow paradise. As in the dreams…

Esprit du Nord

Under the leadership of Jiri, husky team driving is determinedly participative. He does not want the customers to settle themselves under the covers and let themselves be driven. He prefers to show them how deal with the dogs and to take into account the customs and reactions of around thirty Siberian and Alaskan huskies who form the pack.

Introductions take half a day or a whole day and the more fanatical can join treks on high plateaus, with a night in a refuge or under the tent of a Canadian trapper, heated with a wood stove. Unforgettable!

One will participate in everything, in the driving, but also in the preparation of the dogs’ meals and in the petting of the dogs, which is in no way a duty. Jiri, from time to time, moves the pack to other sites. In the Beaufortain for example, i.e. in the high mountains, with big variations in height and for the dogs, it is quite another story.
